DINING TIPS

Looking for an afternoon cup of coffee or a late night cocktail? Want a fine dining experience or a quick bite to eat? The new Guthrie Theater will feature spaces for all of these needs.

THEATER AND MUSIC

With more than 100 theater venues and more theater seats per capita than any other U.S. city outside New York, the Minneapolis theater scene is booming. From cozy playhouses to majestic 3,000-seat theaters, more than 30 venues offer a wide selection of performance styles:

  • The State, Orpheum and Pantages Theatres play host to Broadway productions.
  • Companies such as Theatre de la Jeune Lune, Hennepin Stages, Music Box Theatre and the Brave New Workshop provide and innovative and off-beat twist.

And with the Minnesota Orchestra, St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and Minnesota Opera, Minneapolis boasts musical groups that are the envy of larger cities.

ARTS EXPLOSION INSTITUTIONS

Minneapolis Light RailThe Children’s Theatre Company (CTC)
Since 1965, CTC has created extraordinary theater experiences that educate, challenge and inspire young people. In 2003, CTC was the first theater for young people to receive the Tony Award for Outstanding Regional Theatre. A 45,000-square-foot expansion includes an education wing, rehearsal space, production shops and a second stage with programming primarily for preschoolers and teens. Tip: The Children’s Theatre Company is located right next to the Minneapolis Institute of Arts (MIA).

  • Teresa Eyring, Children’s Theatre Company managing director: "Michael Graves and Associates have done a masterful job of balancing the design needs of CTC along with those of the campus, the neighborhood and the MIA."

Guthrie Theater
A national theater arts and education center, the Guthrie Theater will open a new signature home on the Mississippi River. A mix of three unique spaces: 1,100-seat auditorium for classical works, 700-seat proscenium stage for contemporary productions and 250-seat studio theater for emerging artists – plus rehearsal and education facilities ready to embrace a diverse range of dramatic work. Tip: The Guthrie is located right next to the Walker Art Center (until the Guthrie moves to its new home in June 2006).

  • Joe Dowling, Guthrie Theater artistic director: “When completed, the new Guthrie Theater will not only continue to attract the world’s greatest theater artists, but many thousands of visitors who will celebrate Minnesota as a world-class destination.”
