Live Music

Since Bob Dylan broke onto the folk-rock scene, Minneapolis clubs have nurtured some of the world's most respected artists and a burgeoning nightlife scene. The best-known—and most influential spots for live music include:

First Avenue

Immortalized by Prince in the movie Purple Rain, this now-iconic club has a storied history. In addition to launching "His Royal Purpleness," First Avenue served as the hub of the Minneapolis punk scene. Hüsker Dü, Soul Asylum and the Replacements regularly packed the house.

Today, the club continues to be a favorite tour stop for national acts from alternative to folk-rock to hip-hop.

The Dakota

Minneapolis boasts one of the most active jazz scenes in the country, and the legendary Dakota Restaurant & Jazz Club is one of best-loved venues for musicians and aficionados alike. Imagine Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughn and Mccoy Tyner performing no more than 30 feet from your table.

The club's new digs along restaurant row on Nicollet Mall retain this intimate feeling, and the Dakota continues to draw jazz superstars and the brightest newcomers to Minneapolis.
