Minneapolis boasts
one of the most thriving museum communities in the country. Art, history
and science have their places in numerous art museums, scientific institutions,
historical museums and countless historical sites.

about Minneapolis’ early days on the Mississippi River. The wide range
of arts available to the public in Minneapolis truly is amazing.
ARTS EXPLOSION INSTITUTIONS
The Minneapolis Institute of
Arts
One of the top 10 comprehensive art museums in the country, The Minneapolis
Institute of Arts increases its already-impressive gallery spaces by
40 percent. State-of-the-art classrooms, research facilities and public
spaces greatly enhance visitors’ enjoyment and understanding of
the museum’s renowned collection – representing more than
5,000 years of world history. Tip: Minneapolis Institute
of Arts is located right next to The Children’s Theatre Company.
William M. Griswold, director and president of the Minneapolis
Institute of Arts (MIA): “Our renovated galleries
provide one of the most expansive displays of Chinese and Japanese
art in this country. Our new wing allows us to showcase our collections
of 20th-century and even contemporary art, and to host exceptional
traveling exhibitions.”
Minneapolis Public Library
The new Central Library will house the nation’s fourth-largest
public library collection. Slated as a resource-rich downtown destination
the Library will be a gathering place that inspires learning, invites
interaction and improves access to information. Includes five stories
of space for books, computers, meetings, fireside reading dens, a children’s
library, teen space, a gallery and café. News: A
new Minnesota Planetarium and Space Discovery Center is proposed to be
added
atop the
new Central Library in 2008.
Walker Art Center
The new Walker Art Center is dedicated to presenting the finest contemporary,
visual, performance, film and media artists. Its new expansion doubles
the facility and includes impressive new galleries, a 385-seat theater,
the largest regional library of contemporary art and interactive educational
lounges. A new outdoor "skyspace" by James Turrell complements
the beloved 11-acre Minneapolis Sculpture Garden. Tip: The
Walker is located right next to the Guthrie Theater (until the Guthrie
moves to its new
home in June 2006).
Kathy Halbreich, Walker director: “We seek
to be a center for daring artistic experimentation, a place to experience
something unexpected,
an incubator for discussion and debate, a civic and social meeting
point.”
Weisman Art Museum
Housed in a striking stainless steel and brick building, the Weisman Art
Museum’s collection features early 20th-century American artists
including Georgia O'Keeffe, Alfred Maurer, Marsden Hartley and diverse
contemporary art. A teaching museum for the University of Minnesota and
the community, it provides an engaging arts experience through many programs
and changing exhibitions.
